Perth Poetry Festival 2026 · Ear to the Ground
Put the poem on its feet. Veteran Perth performance poet Allan Boyd, aka the antipoet, and the Perth Slam crew take participants into the practical craft of contemporary slam performance.
The session unpacks what makes a successful slam poem work live, includes performance and discussion, then moves into writing and stagecraft: microphone technique, breath, gesture, posture, expression, audience interaction and timing.
Who it is for
New poets, experienced poets, future slam entrants, curious performers and anyone wanting to strengthen their stage presence are welcome. Bring a short poem if you would like to work with one during the session.
Facilitators
Perth Slam is a community-run monthly poetry slam and coordinates WA heats of the Australian Poetry Slam. Allan Boyd has facilitated poetry workshops around Australia since 1996 and has taught experimental writing and performance poetry.
